The InsightSharer

Why?

The InsightSharer is a technique that spurs the students to make sense and talk about a problem through visualization. Moreover, the method ensures that each student gets an opportunity to articulate their perception of the problem, while still keeping the advantage of group dynamics.

How?

The teacher hands out a sheet of paper to each student. The students quote the problem individually in one sentence at the top of this paper and draw the problem below as they perceive it. Next, the students present their drawings to other fellow students in their group or in class. Based on these presentations, the students discuss in groups; “What is the problem”, “To whom is it a problem?”, and “Why is it a problem?” Finally, the teacher asks the students to, jointly, draw the problem again.

Tips

The students draw the problem in groups by taking turns at drawing five lines each before they pass on the paper to the next student. During this process, they are not allowed to talk with each other. This cultivates a corporative work process that ends with a common definition of the problem.
